Messing with Manchester

I love doing laundry! It’s so satisfying. I love the way it smells. I love doing the sheets.

The cool kindliness of sheets, that soon smooth away trouble; and the rough male kiss of blankets.

I try to apply the organic concept to my clothes and bedding as well. There’s nothing like swimming in organic cotton sheets.
Woody Harrelson

RUDE continues the de-cluttering at home.  Today RUDE Boy delivered a station wagon load of more stuff to a charity shop.  This charity shop’s takings from donated goods, help to fund an aged care facility.

The blanket boxes and linen press in RUDE’S house are being cleaned out today.  It’s amazing what is uncovered that you forgot you had.  It is showing us that we have manchester [bed linen] we do not use and/or had forgotten about.

RUDE Girl recently made a fitted and flat sheet from some old bed linen [refer to video on Rude Record on Facebook].  I have been inspired to make some more fitted and flat sheets.  I really like the feel of cotton sheets made from old cotton doona [duvet] covers.  The cotton used in my rescued from landfill doona [duvet] covers, appears to be of higher quality than sheeting cotton.  I only pick out the very best from the textiles bin at TIP [dump] shops.

Recycled white flannelette QS bed flat sheet, cut to remake a QS bed fitted sheet.

Use a QS flat sheet or fabric with total measurement 85″ x 109″.  Then cut out x4 14″ x 14″ squares from the corners.  Sew up the corners by bringing the edges together.  And then add the elastic by either threading it through a casing or sewing to the perimeter of the sheet.

NB  A very stretchy elastic came out of the fitted sheet to the above flat sheet.  It’s total measurement is 136″ [including overlap]

For those working in metric my apologies, I could not find my metric tape measure.  And I still feel comfortable interchanging with imperial measurement.  And should you require clarification on how to make a fitted sheet, please feel free to message me.  It’s very rewarding, however like with curtains there is a lot of fabric to handle.

Purchasing new bed linen can be expensive, especially if you want quality cotton and linen fabric.  Reuse good quality bed linen by revamping it again for your bed.

The white sheet in the photo above has slightly yellowed in places and smells a bit dusty after storage.  Before I sew it up, I have over locked around the raw edge.  I will use Napisan and soak the fabric overnight in the washing machine.

Lovely Liebster Award

To refuse awards is another way of accepting them with more noise than is normal.

Mark Twain

RUDE were definitely going to accept a Liebster Award from our talented friend Eimear in Ireland and from the blog The Up Sew.  Thank you Eimear for nominating Rude Record for an award.  But crikey, what’s a Liebster Award?

Of course we accepted the Award before we knew what it was all about.  Why?  In blog land you appreciate anyone or anything that makes an effort to recognise your efforts.  And Eimear is such a lovely cyber friend that I would find it hard to say no to her.

First thing was to find out what a Liebster was awarding us for.  You can read all about it here but basically the idea behind this award is to recognize new bloggers and help promote them!

There are a few rules, and the first is to post the award logo.  I decided to post three logos because I love awards.

Eimear  has asked RUDE some questions, and RUDE Girl will answer them as RUDE Boy had to rush off to work.

What persuaded you to start a blog?

It was the best creative avenue for us to compose stories about our frugal lifestyle, where we could also include test, photos, graphics and videos.indexa

Favourite piece of advice you have been given?

At night, if driving, always know what street you are in, just in case you are ambushed and have to call for help.  It makes me smile to remember how and when it was said to me.

What is a favourite make (any medium)?

Hand and machine sewing this recycled fulled wool quilt for my daughter for Christmas 2014.  It was a labour of love.  My first ‘real’ quilt and not simply a patch worked piece.

Best or worst sewing habit?

Worst sewing habit is deliberately dropping cotton thread over the floor.

Most useless sewing gadget in your collection?

I have a couple of antique thimbles but I do not use them for sewing.  I remember my mother saying that a thimble was a nuisance when she hand-stitched.  I have tried to use a thimble when sashiko stitching through layers of denim, but find pulling the needle through with pliers is better.

What would be your ‘dream’ make?

Something like in this video or an Earthship.

Who taught you or inspired you, to sew/make?

I taught and inspired myself, with a bit of help from my sister.  She taught me how to lay out a pattern on fabric.  I did do sewing at school but not a memorable experience.  My mother was a good sewer but she did not intentionally teach me.  Sewing by osmosis, perhaps?

Favourite cartoon character?

Top Cat who lives with his friends in the alley ways and amongst the trash.  A street smart kitty cat.

Favourite piece of music?

RUDE Girl loves music.  I have already posted myself singing my favourite song, in the whole world, on my You Tube channel, if followers would like to check it out here.  It was recorded 2 years ago and has had 1,740 views.  It was my first ever You Tube video recording.  It was not intended for You Tube but when RUDE Boy downloaded it.  It touched his heart actually.  We both decided it was going to be shared with the world.

Now, I would like to nominate the following three bloggers for a Liebster Award.  As part of the rules I must notify them.

Vee at Restyle4Life
Maretta at Osgood My Collection
Terese at Green Teresa

My 10 questions as per the rules are as follows:

What do you like most about Rude Record’s blog?
Why do you blog?
What is your favourite topic to blog about?
What don’t you like when you read other blogs?
What is your passion?
Is mending a joy or a chore?
What’s your favourite meal?
Are you a homebody or traveller?
What is your best recycled find?
Was getting this Liebster Award an honour?

Beat The Man and pay forward the Liebster Award love!

Valentine’s Day the Rude Way

I love bringing roses to a woman when she least expects it.

Esai Morales

RUDE Boy’s rude Valentine’s Day Gift to RUDE Girl

In typical RUDE fashion, RUDE Boy went out to mow the grass this morning. After his yard work was finished, he came back inside with these roses from our front garden.  He came into the study, and placed them in front of me on my desk.

He apologised that the petals are nearly spent and that he was a day early.  However, as in the above quote by Esai Morales, it’s lovely to be brought roses when I am least expecting it.  And pink roses in a pink Coke glass, well that really is very rude!  Oh, and the glass was rescued from landfill.

Sexy underwear is oftentimes, on the gift list for Valentine’s day.  RUDE Girl has her own rude twist on how to show her love for RUDE Boy this Valentine’s Day.

I have decided to fix the elastic in three pairs of his sexy black James Bond style trunks.  RUDE Boy will love that I did not resort to buying him a black thong!  He will be very happy with his mended jocks.

RUDE Girl’s Valentine’s Day gift to RUDE Boy is to add new elastic to his trunks

Relish for Repair

via ifixit

There is one advantage to having nothing, it never needs repair.

RUDE have been continuing on with our de-cluttering.  We have undertaken the bulk of it.  RUDE Boy reckons we have easily taken a tonne of stuff to the local charity shops.  As time and energy permits we are now in the process of fine tuning storage of that stuff which remains.  And we still have to go through the photos and personal papers.  And the small storage shed in the backyard.

We feel lighter and more in control.  And are able to think about new projects for 2016. I made a decision to say cheerio to some unfinished projects from 2015.

Photos below: RUDE Girl’s first ever attempt at weaving.  I made up a cardboard loom and weaved this piece.  I decided that the loom was taking up too much room in my studio.  I took the fabric off the loom.  And I am going to make a small lined purse with a zipper.

Years ago RUDE attempted to get a Repair Cafe off and running in our town in the outer west of Melbourne.  The interest was just not there.   Then we lost interest due to the apathy.  We are not procrastinating types.  And we believe there was no point flogging a dead horse = life’s too short.

In 2016, and all going well we hope to volunteer some of our time and skills to the very first Repair Cafe in Melbourne, Victoria, Australia.  If we cannot have a Repair Cafe in our own suburb we will go to where one is happening.  Stick it to The Man, yey!

Here is an article about the initiative and launch as follows:

The launch of Melbourne (Inner West) Repair Cafe will be on Sunday, 21st of February, 2016 from 11am to 3pm, in the Yarraville Gardens, Yarraville as part of its Living Future Festival during Sustainability Week.

RUDE Boy will be demonstrating as follows:

1.  how to fix a leaking garden hose

2. how to change a three point electrical plug on an electrical cord

and if any person brings along an electrical appliance that’s not working, he can test it with a multi meter.

RUDE Girl will be demonstrating as follows:

1.  what is sashiko mending?

2.  examples of basic sewing/mending

We will be in attendance for all of the event and will be chatting generally to the public about the first Repair Cafe on the 6th March at Rhubarb Wholefoods from 10am to 12md.

We hope to meet some of our blog followers in Yarraville on the 21st of this month or at future Repair Cafes.  Please come and say hi to us if you are in the area.

Check out the repair of RUDE Boy’s around the house shorts in this video

RUDE Boy’s now famous Fabiani shorts will be on display at the Repair Cafe launch event.  Kylie’s op shop hot pants [photo below] do not even compare.

You can Beat The Man by saying no to buying new, until you are sure an item cannot be repaired, by the friendly tinkers and tailors at your local Repair Cafe.
